Jeffrey R. Cusmariu, M.D., specializes in Sports Medicine, Hip Arthroscopy, General Orthopedics and Joint Replacement. He has recently joined St. Vincent’s Orthopedics [from OrthoSports Associates] and practices at St. Vincent’s Birmingham and in Gardendale, Alabama. He has hospital affiliation with St. Vincent’s Birmingham and also performs outpatient procedures at Gardendale Surgery Center.
Dr. Cusmariu has a specific interest in hip arthroscopy and minimally invasive hip preservation techniques to address Femoroacetabular Impingement (FAI) . If the arthritis has progressed beyond the point where these techniques are no longer feasible, he is also able to perform minimally invasive hip replacement. He is the first orthopaedic surgeon to bring the Wright Medical SUPERPATH™ Micro-Posterior Approach, and more recently, the Stryker Direct Superior Approach, to Alabama.
Dr. Cusmariu uses the latest techniques to uniquely address the variety of conditions that can affect the musculoskeletal system. These include:

Dr. Cusmariu received his medical degree from Duke University in 1996. He completed his residency at the University of Birmingham in 2001 and holds subspecialty fellowship training in Sports Medicine from the Aspen Foundation for Sports Medicine, Education and Research in Aspen, Colorado. Dr. Cusmariu is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 2003 and maintains a Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine since 2007.
His professional affiliations include memberships in the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Medical Association, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, the Alabama Orthopaedic Society and the Jefferson County Medical Society. He has represented Alabama on the Council of Delegates for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine from 2013 to 2019.
Dr. Cusmariu is very active in the Birmingham community where he volunteers his time at many local sporting events. He and his wife live in Birmingham with their two boys.
